Franz Josef is a small town on New Zealand's West Coast, best known as the gateway to the Franz Josef Glacier. This dynamic river of ice descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, creating a dramatic landscape that few places on Earth can match. The town itself is compact, with a handful of lodges, cafes, and tour operators, but the real draw is the glacier and the surrounding Westland Tai Poutini National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Take a guided heli-hike onto the glacier's blue ice, or walk to the terminal face viewpoint (note that the glacier is receding, so the walk now ends at a viewpoint rather than the ice).
- Glacier Valley Walk – A free, easy 1.5-hour return walk along the valley floor to the glacier's terminal face viewpoint, with interpretive signs about glacial history.
- Lake Matheson – A short drive south, famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman; best visited at sunrise or sunset.
- West Coast Scenic Helicopter Flights – Several operators offer flights over the glacier and the Alps, often landing on snowfields.
- Okarito Lagoon – A 30-minute drive north, this serene lagoon is perfect for kayaking, birdwatching (including the rare white heron/ kotuku), and the Okarito Trig walk with panoramic views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one night in Franz Josef, which allows for a full day of glacier activities and a side trip to Lake Matheson or Okarito. If you're on a tight itinerary, a half-day can be enough to do the valley walk and a heli-hike, but you'll want at least two nights if you plan to explore the wider national park or do multiple hikes.
