Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, cascading from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 250 metres above sea level. The sheer scale of the ice—over 13 kilometres long—combined with the surrounding lush West Coast bush makes for a surreal landscape that feels almost prehistoric. Whether you hike to the terminal face, take a heli-hike onto the ice, or simply soak in the views from Lake Matheson, Fox Glacier delivers an intimate encounter with moving ice that few places on Earth can match.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find that one full day is sufficient to experience the glacier up close and enjoy Lake Matheson. Arrive early to catch the mirror reflection at Lake Matheson (best before 9 am), then spend the late morning walking to the glacier terminal face. If you're doing a heli-hike, allow at least half a day. For those keen on longer tramping, the Copland Track and Welcome Flat Hot Pools are a rewarding multi-day option nearby.
