Arthur's Pass is a dramatic alpine pass straddling the Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, where the road snakes through steep valleys, past waterfalls and ancient beech forests. This is the gateway between Canterbury and the West Coast, offering some of New Zealand's most accessible alpine hiking and a palpable sense of wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Arthur's Pass in a few hours, stopping for a short walk and lunch. To fully appreciate the park, plan a full day to tackle one of the longer hikes, such as Avalanche Peak or the Bealey Valley. If you're driving the TranzAlpine route, an overnight stay lets you enjoy the evening light and early morning birdlife.
