Arthur's Pass is a dramatic alpine pass straddling the Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, where the road snakes through steep valleys, past waterfalls and ancient beech forests. This is the gateway between Canterbury and the West Coast, offering some of New Zealand's most accessible alpine hiking and a palpable sense of wilderness.

- Bealey Valley Track – an easy riverside walk through beech forest with glimpses of the surrounding peaks and the chance to spot kea.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – a short detour from the highway provides a vertiginous view of the engineering marvel that carries the road across the Otira Gorge.
- Avalanche Peak – a challenging day hike for experienced trampers, rewarding with 360-degree views of the Southern Alps.

Most travellers pass through Arthur's Pass in a few hours, stopping for a short walk and lunch. To fully appreciate the park, plan a full day to tackle one of the longer hikes, such as Avalanche Peak or the Bealey Valley. If you're driving the TranzAlpine route, an overnight stay lets you enjoy the evening light and early morning birdlife.
