Deep in the South Island’s wild West Coast, the Whataroa White Heron Sanctuary is New Zealand’s only breeding colony of the elegant kōtuku (white heron). Accessible only by a guided tour from the small settlement of Whataroa, this protected forest and riverine habitat offers a rare chance to observe these exquisite birds up close, along with other native wildlife. The sanctuary is a testament to successful conservation, and visiting feels like stepping into a hidden natural cathedral.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate half a day for the sanctuary experience, as the guided tour (including jet boat and walking) takes about 2.5–3 hours. Combine it with a stop in Whataroa for a coffee or a bite at the local café. If you’re driving the West Coast, this makes an excellent mid-morning or afternoon break between Franz Josef and Haast.
