Ship Creek, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a short but enchanting stop that packs in ancient rainforest, a lonely beach, and a slice of gold-mining history. The real draw here is the Kahikatea swamp forest boardwalk – a 20-minute loop that winds through a cathedral-like grove of towering white pines, some over 600 years old. After the walk, the beach offers a moody, driftwood-strewn stretch of Tasman Sea shoreline, where you can often have the entire place to yourself. It's a quintessential West Coast moment: damp, quiet, and hauntingly beautiful.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Ship Creek is a quick stop – allow 30–45 minutes to do both the forest walk and a short beach stroll. It's best treated as a break on the drive between Haast and Fox Glacier, rather than a destination in itself. If you're a keen photographer or birdwatcher, budget an hour to linger.
