Okarito is a tiny, tranquil coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, best known for its stunning lagoon and the towering peaks of the Southern Alps that form a dramatic backdrop. This sleepy village, once a bustling gold-mining port, now offers a serene escape with exceptional birdlife, kayaking, and the chance to experience the wild West Coast without the crowds. The Okarito Lagoon, a protected wetland and bird sanctuary, is the star attraction, while the nearby Okarito Beach provides a wild, windswept stretch of sand perfect for contemplative walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Okarito Lagoon – New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland, teeming with birdlife. Take a guided kayak tour or hire a kayak to paddle through the reflective waters, with the Southern Alps looming in the distance. Keep an eye out for white herons (kotuku), royal spoonbills, and the rare Okarito kiwi (rowi).
- Okarito Beach – A wild, black-sand beach stretching for miles. Walk along the shore, watch the ocean swells crash, and look for the remains of the historic gold-mining dredge, the Kaniere.
- Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary – A conservation area protecting the endangered rowi (Okarito brown kiwi). While sightings are rare, you can join a guided night walk with a local operator to try to spot these elusive birds.
- Trinity Wharf – A historic wharf at the southern end of the lagoon, offering panoramic views and a great spot for birdwatching or simply soaking in the tranquility.
- Okarito Trig Walk – A short but steep climb through lush rainforest to a viewpoint overlooking the lagoon, beach, and mountains. Best done at sunset for golden light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Okarito is a place to slow down. Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day here, combining a kayak trip on the lagoon with a walk on the beach and the Trig Track. If you're keen on birdwatching or want to do the guided kiwi walk, plan for an overnight stay. Accommodation is limited, so book ahead in summer. The village is easily visited as a detour from the Glacier Country (Franz Josef and Fox Glacier) – it's about a 30-minute drive from Franz Josef.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – Just 30 minutes north, offering glacier hikes, heli-hikes, and the Franz Josef Hot Pools.
- Fox Glacier – A 40-minute drive south, with similar glacier experiences and the stunning Lake Matheson.

- Lake Mapourika – A dark-water lake near Franz Josef, perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding with mirror-like reflections of the mountains.
- Hokitika – A charming town about 1.5 hours north, known for its pounamu (greenstone) galleries, the Hokitika Gorge, and sunset views on the beach.
