Jackson Bay is the end of the road on the wild West Coast – literally. State Highway 6 terminates here after a spectacular 30 km detour from Haast, rewarding you with a raw, untamed coastline where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea. This tiny settlement, with its handful of baches and a working fishing wharf, feels like the edge of the world. The air is thick with salt and the sound of crashing surf, and on a clear day the views stretch across the bay to the distant glaciers. It’s a place for solitude, storm-watching, and the simple pleasure of a freshly caught whitebait pattie.
Highlights & What to See
- Jackson Bay Wharf: Watch fishing boats unload their catch or cast a line yourself – this working wharf is the heart of the settlement. In season (September–November), grab a whitebait fritter from the food truck parked here.
- Coastal Walkway: A short, easy track follows the foreshore, offering sweeping views of the Southern Alps and, on a clear day, Aoraki/Mount Cook. Keep an eye out for Hector’s dolphins playing in the surf.
- Jackson Bay Cemetery: This poignant hillside cemetery tells the story of early settlers and shipwreck victims, with graves dating back to the 1860s. The views alone make the short climb worthwhile.
- Shipwreck Sites: The bay’s treacherous waters have claimed many vessels. Look for remnants of the Waipara (1902) and Mahinapua (1905) at low tide near the wharf.
- Whitebaiting Season: From September to November, the bay becomes a hub for whitebaiters. Pull up a bench and watch the age-old ritual of net fishing from the shore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here – enough to walk the foreshore, explore the wharf, and soak up the atmosphere. If you’re a keen angler or photographer, you could easily linger for half a day. Jackson Bay is best treated as a detour from Haast (30 minutes each way) rather than a destination in itself. Time your visit for late afternoon when the light turns golden and the crowds (if any) have thinned.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: The nearest town, 30 km north, is the gateway to the Haast Pass and has basic supplies, a pub, and a visitor centre.
- Haast River: Stop at the Haast River bridge to spot whitebaiters and, if you’re lucky, a glimpse of the rare Haast tokoeka kiwi.
- Ship Creek: A 15-minute drive north of Haast, this short walk leads through dune lakes and nikau palm forest to a wild beach – a great spot for a leg stretch.
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers: Two hours north, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks. Combine Jackson Bay with a glacier visit for a full West Coast day.
- Haast Pass: The scenic drive over the pass to Wanaka (1.5 hours) is one of New Zealand’s great road trips, with waterfalls and short bush walks along the way.
