Jackson Bay

Jackson Bay is the end of the road on the wild West Coast – literally. State Highway 6 terminates here after a spectacular 30 km detour from Haast, rewarding you with a raw, untamed coastline where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea. This tiny settlement, with its handful of baches and a working fishing wharf, feels like the edge of the world. The air is thick with salt and the sound of crashing surf, and on a clear day the views stretch across the bay to the distant glaciers. It’s a place for solitude, storm-watching, and the simple pleasure of a freshly caught whitebait pattie.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here – enough to walk the foreshore, explore the wharf, and soak up the atmosphere. If you’re a keen angler or photographer, you could easily linger for half a day. Jackson Bay is best treated as a detour from Haast (30 minutes each way) rather than a destination in itself. Time your visit for late afternoon when the light turns golden and the crowds (if any) have thinned.
