Hokitika is a small town on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea meets ancient rainforest and glacier-fed rivers. Once a booming gold-rush port, today it's a laid-back creative hub known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, stunning sunsets over the driftwood-strewn beach, and proximity to the glaciers and wilderness of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The town's quirky galleries, craft breweries, and the famous Hokitika Gorge make it an essential stop on any West Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge – A short drive from town leads to a swingbridge over impossibly turquoise water, set against lush native bush. The walk is easy and the colour is unforgettable.
- Glow Worm Dell – Just a few minutes' walk from the highway, this free attraction lets you see thousands of glow worms after dark – a magical, easy-access experience.
- Pounamu (Greenstone) Carving Workshops – Several studios offer hands-on carving sessions where you can make your own taonga (treasure) under the guidance of local artists.
- National Kiwi Centre – See live kiwi in a nocturnal house, plus tuatara and giant eels you can feed. Great for families and a rainy-day option.
- Hokitika Beach & Sunset Point – The beach is famous for its driftwood sculptures and spectacular sunsets. The Hokitika sign made of driftwood is a classic photo spot.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail – A cycle trail that passes through Hokitika, offering easy riding through rainforest, along lakes, and over historic trestle bridges.
- Lake Kaniere – A beautiful lake surrounded by native bush, ideal for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking. The Dorothy Falls track nearby is a short walk to a cascading waterfall.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one full day and one night in Hokitika, which allows time for the gorge, a glow worm visit after dark, and a morning exploring the town's galleries and carving workshops. If you're cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail, budget two days. Hokitika also works well as a stopover between Greymouth and Franz Josef Glacier.
