Hokitika is a small town on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea meets ancient rainforest and glacier-fed rivers. Once a booming gold-rush port, today it's a laid-back creative hub known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, stunning sunsets over the driftwood-strewn beach, and proximity to the glaciers and wilderness of Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The town's quirky galleries, craft breweries, and the famous Hokitika Gorge make it an essential stop on any West Coast road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend one full day and one night in Hokitika, which allows time for the gorge, a glow worm visit after dark, and a morning exploring the town's galleries and carving workshops. If you're cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail, budget two days. Hokitika also works well as a stopover between Greymouth and Franz Josef Glacier.
