Haast is a remote settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, a gateway to the dramatic landscapes of the Haast Pass and the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu. This is a place of untamed rivers, ancient rainforests, and glaciers that tumble from the Southern Alps to the sea. Haast itself is a small service town, but its surroundings offer some of New Zealand's most awe-inspiring natural experiences.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travelers pass through Haast in a day, using it as a stopover between Wanaka and the glaciers. However, to fully appreciate the area's walks and wildlife, plan for at least one full day (two nights). This allows time for a jet boat ride, a few short walks, and a leisurely drive along the coast.
