Haast Pass is a dramatic alpine crossing that cuts through the Southern Alps, connecting the West Coast's wild rainforests with the lakes and mountains of Central Otago. The drive is a journey in itself, winding past cascading waterfalls, ancient beech forests, and glacier-fed rivers. This is New Zealand at its most raw and untamed — a place where you'll want to stop frequently to soak in the scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers drive Haast Pass in 2–4 hours, but you'll want to budget at least half a day to stop at the key viewpoints and short walks. If you're keen on the Brewster Track or plan to linger for photography, allow a full day. The pass is often done as a scenic route between Wanaka and the West Coast, so it's best incorporated into a larger itinerary.
