Whataroa White Heron Sanctuary

Deep in South Westland, the Whataroa White Heron Sanctuary is New Zealand's only nesting site for the majestic kōtuku (white heron). This rare, sacred bird appears in Māori legend as a symbol of beauty and rarity, and seeing one in flight against the lush rainforest is a genuinely moving experience. Access is by guided tour only, which includes a jet boat ride up the Waitangiroto River and a gentle walk through the swamp forest to viewing hides. It's a wildlife encounter that feels both intimate and profound.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow half a day for the tour (roughly 2.5–3 hours) plus travel to/from Whataroa. The sanctuary is only open to guided tours, so book ahead in peak season. If you're driving from Franz Josef or Fox Glacier, it's a scenic 30–40 minute detour that pairs well with a morning or afternoon glacier walk.
