Okarito Lagoon, New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland, is a serene slice of West Coast wilderness. This mirror-still lagoon, framed by snow-capped peaks and dense rainforest, is a birdwatcher's paradise and a kayaker's dream. The tiny settlement of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, offers a peaceful base to explore the lagoon's tranquil waters and abundant birdlife, including the rare kotuku (white heron).

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least half a day to Okarito Lagoon. A morning kayak (2–3 hours) followed by the Okarito Trig walk (1 hour) is ideal. If you're keen on the white heron tour, allow an additional 2.5 hours. Many visitors find a full day here wonderfully unhurried, especially if you linger on the beach or enjoy a coffee at the local heritage café.
