Lake Mapourika is a dark, mirror-still lake just north of Franz Josef Glacier, famous for its extraordinary reflections of the Southern Alps and native rainforest. The water's dark tannin stain comes from surrounding kahikatea swamp forest, creating perfect reflections on calm days – especially at sunrise. It's a serene and photogenic spot that offers a quiet counterpoint to the glacier crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ideal – spend 1–2 hours on the walking track and jetty, then add a 2–3 hour kayak trip if you're keen. Most visitors combine Lake Mapourika with a morning at Franz Josef Glacier, making it a full day in the area. If you're short on time, a 30-minute stop at the jetty is still rewarding.
