Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a wild, untamed slice of New Zealand's South Island where ancient glaciers carve through temperate rainforest and meet the wild Tasman Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers some of the most accessible glacier walking in the world, alongside dramatic alpine scenery, pristine lakes, and a coastline pounded by surf. It's a place where you can stand before a towering wall of ice in the morning and walk along a black-sand beach in the afternoon — a quintessential New Zealand experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier — Walk up to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice; the valley walk is free and gives you a sense of the glacier's scale.
- Fox Glacier — Slightly less busy than Franz Josef, with a stunning walk to the glacier viewpoint and a more intimate heli-hike experience.
- Lake Matheson — Famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman; the easy loop track is best at sunrise or sunset.
- Okarito Lagoon — New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland; kayak through the tranquil waters or take a boat tour to spot white herons (kotuku).
- Gillespies Beach — A wild black-sand beach with seal colonies and the remains of a gold-mining settlement; a short walk leads to a seal colony.
- Copland Track — A challenging multi-day tramp leading to the Copland hot pools, natural rock baths with mountain views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one to two days in the park, which is enough for a glacier walk (heli-hike or valley walk), a visit to Lake Matheson, and a coastal wander. If you're keen on longer tramps like the Copland Track or want to explore both Franz Josef and Fox villages thoroughly, allow three days. The park is compact, so you can base yourself in either Franz Josef or Fox Glacier and drive between highlights in 20–30 minutes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Village — The main gateway with accommodation, restaurants, and glacier tour operators; a short drive from the glacier car park.
- Fox Glacier Village — Smaller and quieter, with a couple of good cafes and easy access to Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson.
- Hokitika — A charming coastal town 1.5 hours north, known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Whataroa — A tiny settlement near the Okarito Lagoon, with a sanctuary for the rare white heron.
- Haast Pass — A scenic drive south connecting the West Coast to Wanaka and Queenstown, with waterfalls, rainforest walks, and the Gates of Haast.
