West Coast Glaciers

Few experiences rival standing at the foot of a glacier that grinds its way from New Zealand's Southern Alps almost to the sea. The West Coast Glaciers — Franz Josef and Fox — are among the most accessible ice rivers on the planet, plunging through temperate rainforest to within a few kilometres of the road. The air here smells of damp earth, moss, and ancient ice; the sound of crevasses groaning and meltwater rushing fills the valley. It's a raw, humbling landscape that shifts daily, and you can walk right up to its edge or take a helicopter onto the ice itself.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least two full days to explore both glaciers and their surrounds. A typical itinerary: Day 1 — arrive in Franz Josef, do the terminal-face walk and a heli-hike. Day 2 — drive 25 minutes to Fox Glacier for the terminal walk, then spend the afternoon at Lake Matheson and Okarito. If you have a third day, consider a longer guided ice hike or a scenic flight over both glaciers.
