St James Walkway is a remote, multi-day tramping track in the Lewis Pass region of New Zealand's South Island, offering a true backcountry experience through beech forests, alpine meadows, and along braided rivers. This 67-kilometer loop is less frequented than the Great Walks, providing solitude and raw natural beauty for experienced hikers.
Highlights & What to See
- Anne Hut to Boyle Flat Hut section: Traverse open tussock lands with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the Waiau River valley.
- Christopher River crossing: A dramatic swing bridge over a crystal-clear river, perfect for a photo stop and a dip on a warm day.
- St James Station: Historic high-country sheep station remnants, offering a glimpse into the region's pastoral history.
- Alpine birdlife: Keep an eye out for kea, the mischievous alpine parrot, and the melodious bellbird in the forest sections.
- Hot springs at Lewis Pass: A side trip to the natural hot pools near the start of the walkway is a rewarding way to soothe tired muscles after your hike.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers complete the full loop in 3 to 4 days, with options to shorten by using a mountain bike on the access roads. Plan for 6–8 hours of walking per day; the track is well-marked but requires a good level of fitness and backcountry experience. Book huts in advance during peak season (October to April) as they fill quickly.
