Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is a conservation stronghold for the rarest kiwi species – the rowi. This misty, moss-draped forest and lagoon ecosystem offers one of the country’s most intimate wildlife encounters. Join a guided twilight tour to watch these shy, long-billed birds foraging in the wild, or explore the pristine wetlands by kayak. It’s a place where the silence is broken only by birdcall and the rustle of ferns, a true sanctuary for both kiwi and soul.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least a full day and one night to truly experience the sanctuary. Arrive in the late afternoon, take the Trig Walk for sunset, then join the evening kiwi tour (around 2–3 hours). The next morning, explore the lagoon by kayak or on the Three Mile Walk before heading on. If you’re short on time, a guided kiwi tour alone takes about 3 hours, but you’ll miss the daytime beauty of the lagoon.
