Knight Point is a dramatic coastal lookout on the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where the Tasman Sea crashes against rugged cliffs and dense rainforest meets the shore. This short but rewarding stop offers one of the most accessible seal-watching opportunities in the region, with New Zealand fur seals often lounging on the rocks below. The viewing platform provides sweeping ocean vistas that stretch toward the Southern Alps, making it a classic West Coast moment you can pull over and soak in without a long hike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Knight Point is best as a quick stop of 15–30 minutes – enough time to stretch your legs, scan for seals, and snap a few photos. It works perfectly as a break between Franz Josef and Haast, or as a short detour on a longer drive along State Highway 6. If you’re keen to linger, pack a picnic and find a spot on the grass near the car park, but note there are no facilities beyond a basic toilet.
