Hokitika is a classic West Coast town where wild Tasman Sea surf meets a gold-rush past and a thriving contemporary arts scene. The main street still feels like a frontier settlement, but its galleries, greenstone workshops, and excellent food spots give it a creative, laid-back energy. You'll find untamed beaches, a historic town core, and easy access to the region's famous natural wonders.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge – A short walk leads to a swingbridge over impossibly turquoise water, carved through glacial rock. One of the West Coast's most photogenic spots.
- Glow Worm Dell – Just off the highway, a five-minute evening stroll reveals a magical canopy of glow worms. Bring a torch and your quietest footsteps.
- National Kiwi Centre – See live kiwi, tuatara, and giant eels up close. A great rainy-day option and a chance to meet New Zealand's iconic bird.
- Hokitika Beach & Sunset Point – The driftwood sculptures and dramatic sunsets over the Tasman are legendary. The historic beachfront is perfect for a contemplative walk.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail – This cycle trail passes through Hokitika, linking lakes, forests, and historic gold-mining settlements. Easy to do a day ride or a multi-day section.
- Bonz 'N' Stonz Jade & Art Gallery – Watch pounamu (greenstone) carvers at work and browse contemporary NZ art, jewelry, and crafts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal: one for the town and its immediate attractions, and a second for the gorge, a walk on the beach, and perhaps a cycle or drive to nearby lakes. If you're on a road trip, even an overnight stop gives you time for a sunset stroll and a morning at the gorge.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – An hour's drive south, with glacier valley walks, heli-hikes, and hot pools.
