Westport is a rugged coastal town at the mouth of the Buller River, where the untamed West Coast meets the Tasman Sea. It's a base for wild adventures – think black-sand beaches, seal colonies, and historic gold-mining valleys. The town itself has a frontier feel, with a handful of pubs and fish-and-chip shops, but the real draw is the surrounding landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Foulwind Walkway: A coastal track with epic views of the Tasman Sea and a large colony of New Zealand fur seals – you can watch pups playing in rock pools.
- Buller Gorge: Drive or take the scenic railway through this dramatic river canyon; stop for a swingbridge walk or jetboat ride.
- Denniston Plateau: An eerie historic coal-mining site perched 600m above sea level, with rusted relics and panoramic views – a must for industrial-history buffs.
- Oparara Basin Arches: Limestone arches and a tranquil rainforest walk, about 30 minutes north of town – look for the huge Oparara Arch and Moria Gate Arch.
- Truman Track: A short rainforest walk that leads to a stunning driftwood-strewn beach and sea-carved caverns at low tide.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal: one to explore Cape Foulwind and the Oparara Basin, and another for Denniston and the Buller Gorge. If you're passing through on a road trip, you can hit the highlights in a long day – start early to fit in the seals and at least one walk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks: Just 50 minutes south, these layered limestone formations and blowholes are a classic West Coast stop.
- Karamea: The gateway to the Heaphy Track and the remote Oparara Basin – a quiet, lush valley with more caves and arches.
- Reefton: A historic gold-mining town with well-preserved Victorian architecture and glowworm caves, an hour east.
- Abel Tasman National Park: About 2.5 hours north via the scenic coastal route, offering golden beaches and kayaking – a sharp contrast to Westport's wild coast.
