Buller Gorge is a dramatic river canyon carved by the Buller River through the Paparoa Range on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. This rugged landscape of steep cliffs, dense native forest, and swift-flowing waters offers a quintessential West Coast wilderness experience. The area is renowned for its swingbridge, one of the longest in New Zealand, and opportunities for jet boating, hiking, and gold-panning.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Buller Gorge, which is enough time to cross the swingbridge, take a jet boat ride, and do a short walk. If you're keen on gold-panning or a longer hike, allow half a day. The gorge is a convenient stop on the drive between Westport and Greymouth, so it fits easily into a self-drive itinerary along the West Coast.
