On the wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Paparoa National Park is a dramatic collision of rainforest, limestone cliffs, and pounding Tasman Sea surf. This is a place where nature feels raw and untamed, from the pancake-stacked rocks of Punakaiki to the glowworm-lit caves hidden in the bush. It’s a compact park, but packed with short walks, birdlife, and coastal views that will stop you in your tracks.
Highlights & What to See
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes – The star attraction: layered limestone formations that look like stacks of pancakes, with blowholes that erupt at high tide. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
- Paparoa Track – A world-class multi-day hike (or mountain-bike ride) that traverses the park’s heart, passing through beech forest, limestone country, and ending at the coast.
- Pororari River Track – An easy, beautiful walk through a limestone canyon, with towering cliffs, lush ferns, and the chance to spot blue ducks.
- Truman Track – A short, spectacular walk to a secluded beach, with sea caves and a waterfall that drops onto the sand.
- Fox River Caves – A moderate hike leads to a cave system where glowworms light up the darkness; bring a torch and sense of adventure.
- Punakaiki Cavern – Right beside the main road, this small limestone cave is a quick, free introduction to the park’s underground wonders.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors experience the park as a day trip from Greymouth or Westport, but you could easily spend two days exploring. If you’re short on time, the Pancake Rocks and a short walk like the Truman Track are essential. For a deeper experience, overnight on the Paparoa Track or stay in Punakaiki village and spend a full day walking the Pororari River and Truman tracks, plus a cave visit.
