Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) is a sprawling coastal lagoon on the eastern edge of Canterbury, just south of Christchurch. Its shallow, brackish waters are a haven for birdlife, with over 160 species recorded, making it a must-visit for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The lake is culturally significant to Ngāi Tahu, and its surrounding wetlands offer serene walking trails, fishing spots, and stunning views of the Southern Alps.
