Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) is a sprawling coastal lagoon on the eastern edge of Canterbury, just south of Christchurch. Its shallow, brackish waters are a haven for birdlife, with over 160 species recorded, making it a must-visit for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The lake is culturally significant to Ngāi Tahu, and its surrounding wetlands offer serene walking trails, fishing spots, and stunning views of the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching paradise – Spot royal spoonbills, black swans, and the rare wrybill; the lake is a Ramsar wetland of international importance.
- Te Waihora walking and cycling trails – Explore the lake's edge on the Ellesmere Spit or the Lakeside Track, with panoramic views over the water to the alps.
- Fishing and water sports – Try your luck for eels, flounder, or trout, or kayak along the sheltered margins.
- Cultural heritage – Learn about the lake's significance to local Māori through interpretative signs and the nearby Ōnuku Marae.
- Sunset photography – The lake's still waters reflect the mountains and sky, creating spectacular photo opportunities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to explore the lake's main access points and walking trails. Birdwatchers may want to spend a full day, especially during migration seasons (spring and autumn). Combine it with a morning at nearby Christchurch or a stop on the way to Banks Peninsula.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Christchurch – Just 30 minutes north, the city offers gardens, museums, and a vibrant food scene.
- Banks Peninsula – The dramatic volcanic landscape of Akaroa and its harbour are an easy 45-minute drive east.
- Lake Forsyth (Te Roto o Wairewa) – A smaller, equally scenic lake adjacent to Ellesmere, great for a quick stop.
- Kaitorete Spit – A long, wild beach separating the lake from the Pacific, perfect for a walk or birdwatching.
