Banks Peninsula, a volcanic crown jewel on Canterbury's coast, feels worlds away from the Canterbury Plains. Its eroded craters, now lush with native bush, cradle secluded bays and the vibrant French-influenced settlement of Akaroa. This is a place to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and discover a unique blend of Māori and European history, wildlife, and dramatic scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give Banks Peninsula at least two full days to do it justice. Spend the first day exploring Akaroa and taking a harbour cruise; dedicate the second to a walk along the Banks Peninsula Track (a short section) or driving the Summit Road loop with stops at viewpoints and bays. If you're short on time, a day trip from Christchurch is feasible, but you'll only scratch the surface.
