Roys Peak Track
Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a challenging but immensely rewarding climb to a dramatic summit with panoramic views over Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, and the braided rivers below. This well-maintained trail is a must for hikers seeking a classic alpine experience without committing to a multi-day tramp.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit viewpoint: The 360-degree vista from the top is simply breathtaking, with Lake Wanaka's deep blue waters contrasting against jagged peaks and the vast Cardrona Valley.
- Wildflowers and tussock: In spring and summer, the lower slopes explode with colourful lupins and native alpine flora, while golden tussock sways in the wind.
- Photography opportunities: Sunrise and sunset casts a golden glow on the landscape, making it a favourite for photographers. The iconic 'Instagram shot' of the lone tree on the ridge is taken from here.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for kea (alpine parrots) near the summit, as well as hawks and the occasional chamois on distant slopes.
- Challenging ascent: The steady, unrelenting switchbacks test your fitness, but the sense of achievement at the top is immense.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers need 5–7 hours round trip, covering 16 km with 1,200 m of elevation gain. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and afternoon cloud build-up. It's a full-day commitment, so pack plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and layers—the weather can change rapidly. Fit walkers can complete it in 5 hours, but allow extra time for photos and breaks at the summit.
