Isthmus Peak Track
Isthmus Peak Track delivers one of the most rewarding day hikes in New Zealand’s South Island, offering panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hāwea from a single summit. This challenging but accessible trail climbs through beech forest and tussock slopes to a 1,380-metre peak, where the twin-lake panorama unfolds like a topographic masterpiece. It’s a quieter alternative to the nearby Rob Roy or Roy’s Peak tracks, with fewer crowds and equally memorable scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit views: From the top, gaze east over Lake Wanaka’s braided delta and west across the deep blue of Lake Hāwea – a classic Otago landscape best photographed in late afternoon light.
- Alpine meadows: In summer (Dec–Feb), the upper slopes are carpeted with mountain daisies, gentians and buttercups, with the chance to spot kea or falcons.
- Beech forest section: The lower trail winds through ancient silver beech and mountain beech, alive with bellbird song and the rustle of native ferns.
- Wilderness solitude: Unlike more famous tracks, Isthmus Peak sees far fewer hikers, especially on weekdays – expect long stretches of silence and unbroken views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day (6–8 hours return) for the 16 km (10 mi) track, including time for rests, photos and a picnic at the summit. Start early to avoid afternoon heat and cloud build-up, and carry plenty of water – there are no streams above the treeline. Fit hikers can combine it with a morning visit to the Blue Pools or a late-afternoon wine tasting in Wanaka.
