Perched high above the dark, damp gorge of the Otira River, the Otira Viaduct is a remarkable feat of engineering that dramatically improved access across the Southern Alps. Opened in 1999, this 440-metre-long concrete structure replaced a notoriously treacherous section of State Highway 73 that was prone to slips and closures. As you drive across, the views are staggering – sheer cliffs, dense rainforest, and the roaring river far below create a sense of awe. It's a must-stop for photographers and anyone fascinated by how modern infrastructure tames one of New Zealand's wildest landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Viaduct Lookout: Pull over at the designated viewing area just before the viaduct for a jaw-dropping perspective of the structure arcing across the chasm. On a clear day, you might spot the Southern Alps in the distance.
- Engineering Marvel: Take a moment to appreciate the scale – the viaduct's tallest pier is 75 metres high. Interpretive panels explain the challenges of building in this remote, earthquake-prone region.
- Scenic Drive: The approach from either side is spectacular. From the west, the road winds through lush temperate rainforest; from the east, it descends from Arthur's Pass through dramatic alpine scenery.
- Walking Tracks: Short trails near the viaduct lead into the beech forest. The Otira Valley Track (from the viaduct's eastern end) offers a gentle walk with river views.
Suggested Time to Spend
You only need 20–30 minutes to stop at the lookout, read the panels, and snap photos. However, if you add a short walk, budget an hour. The viaduct itself is a quick drive-through, but it's worth pausing – especially if you're travelling between the West Coast and Canterbury, as it's a natural break point. Most visitors incorporate it into a half-day or full-day journey across Arthur's Pass.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Arthur's Pass National Park: Just 10 minutes east, this alpine park offers superb hiking (like the Avalanche Peak Track) and chances to see kea parrots.
- Otira Village: A tiny historic settlement 2 km west, once a railway town. Pop into the Otira Hotel for a drink and local stories.
- Fox Glacier & Franz Josef Glacier: About 1.5 hours west, these famous glaciers are a must for ice hikes and helicopter tours.
- Hokitika: 1.5 hours northwest, this coastal town is known for pounamu (greenstone), wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge.
