Mirror-smooth on a still morning, Lake Matheson is a West Coast icon, reflecting the snow-dusted peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman in its dark, tannin-stained waters. The easy loop track through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest leads to several jetty viewpoints, each offering a perfect postcard shot of New Zealand's highest mountains. Dawn and dusk are magical, when the light is soft and the reflections are at their most vivid.
Highlights & What to See
- Reflection Viewpoints: The main jetty and the View of Views lookout are the classic spots for the iconic mountain reflection — arrive before sunrise for the best light and calmest waters.
- Lake Matheson Loop Track: A 2.6 km easy walk on well-formed boardwalks and paths, taking about 40–60 minutes. It winds through lush temperate rainforest with interpretive signs about the flora and fauna.
- Jetty and Reflection Island: Two jetties and a small island viewpoint allow different angles of the reflections — bring a wide-angle lens to capture the full panorama.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds such as kererū (wood pigeon), tūī, and the elusive weka along the forest edges.
- Matheson Cafe: Located at the trailhead, this café offers excellent coffee, homemade baking, and a viewing deck to admire the lake and mountains even if you don't do the full walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allow 1–1.5 hours for the full loop walk and photo stops. Photographers often spend 2–3 hours at sunrise or sunset to capture the changing light and reflections. It's easily done as a morning or late-afternoon outing from Fox Glacier township, which is just a 6 km drive away.
