Hokitika Gorge is a breathtaking natural wonder on New Zealand's West Coast, famous for its impossibly turquoise water set against a backdrop of dense native bush and granite cliffs. The short walk to the swingbridge offers a quintessential West Coast experience: the vivid colour of the water is caused by glacial flour suspended in the flow, and on a sunny day it's a sight you'll remember forever.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Budget about 1 to 1.5 hours for the short walk and photo stops. It's an easy detour on the way between Fox Glacier and Hokitika, and works well as a morning or afternoon outing. Combine with a visit to Hokitika town for lunch or a coffee to round out a half-day trip.
