Haast Township is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of the South Island, serving as the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu region. With a population of barely 100, it's less a town and more a strategic outpost for adventurers crossing between the glaciers and the lakes of Otago. The mood here is raw and elemental: dense rainforest, roaring rivers, and the ever-present sound of the Tasman Sea crashing against rugged shores. It's a place to pause, refuel, and recalibrate before diving into some of New Zealand's most remote and spectacular wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Haast River: A braided river of turquoise meltwater, best seen from the Haast Pass Highway or on a scenic flight. Kayaking and jet-boat tours offer up-close encounters with the glacier-fed currents.
- Haast Beach & Ship Creek: Wild, windswept beaches with driftwood-strewn sands. Ship Creek has a short walk through kahikatea swamp forest to a lookout over the Tasman Sea – keep an eye out for seals and penguins.
- Monro Beach Walk: A 30-minute forest walk leading to a remote beach where Fiordland crested penguins come ashore to nest (July–December). The track winds through rimu and silver beech, often drenched in mist.
- Jackson Bay: The end of the road on the West Coast, this tiny fishing hamlet offers a café and wharf. In season, whitebait fritters are a must-try local specialty.
- Haast Pass Highway: The dramatic road linking the West Coast to Wanaka and Queenstown, winding through moss-draped beech forest, past waterfalls and alpine tarns. Stop at the Gates of Haast bridge for a photo of the churning river gorge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through Haast in a day, using it as a lunch stop or overnight break between the glaciers (Fox and Franz Josef) and Wanaka. To truly appreciate the area's raw beauty, plan for at least one full day: spend the morning exploring Haast Beach and Ship Creek, have a feed of whitebait at the local pub, then tackle the Monro Beach walk in the afternoon. If you're keen on fishing or kayaking, add another half-day. Haast is a place to slow down and let the wilderness seep in – rushing it misses the point.
