Haast Township

Haast Township is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of the South Island, serving as the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu region. With a population of barely 100, it's less a town and more a strategic outpost for adventurers crossing between the glaciers and the lakes of Otago. The mood here is raw and elemental: dense rainforest, roaring rivers, and the ever-present sound of the Tasman Sea crashing against rugged shores. It's a place to pause, refuel, and recalibrate before diving into some of New Zealand's most remote and spectacular wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Haast in a day, using it as a lunch stop or overnight break between the glaciers (Fox and Franz Josef) and Wanaka. To truly appreciate the area's raw beauty, plan for at least one full day: spend the morning exploring Haast Beach and Ship Creek, have a feed of whitebait at the local pub, then tackle the Monro Beach walk in the afternoon. If you're keen on fishing or kayaking, add another half-day. Haast is a place to slow down and let the wilderness seep in – rushing it misses the point.
