Otira Gorge is a dramatic, narrow canyon on the edge of Arthur's Pass National Park, where the highway clings to sheer cliffs above the roaring Otira River. This short but spectacular stretch of road is one of New Zealand's most thrilling drives, with waterfalls cascading down rock faces and dense rainforest crowding the valley. The gorge marks the boundary between the Southern Alps' high country and the wild West Coast, making it a memorable stop for anyone crossing between Canterbury and the Tasman Sea.
Highlights & What to See
- Otira Gorge Lookout: Pull over for jaw-dropping views of the gorge's vertical walls and the river far below. On a clear day, the contrast of grey rock, green bush, and white water is stunning.
- Otira Viaduct: This modern engineering marvel curves gracefully over the gorge. Park at the viewing area to appreciate its scale and the surrounding wilderness.
- Waterfalls: Several waterfalls tumble directly beside the road, especially after rain. The most famous is the 131-metre-high Otira Falls, easily spotted from the car.
- Historic Otira Village: A tiny settlement at the gorge's western end, once a bustling railway town. The Otira Hotel (circa 1920s) offers a glimpse into the past and a cold drink for travellers.
- Walking Tracks: The Otira Valley Track starts near the village and leads into alpine tussock and rock, with views of Mount Rolleston. It's a great short leg-stretcher.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour driving through the gorge and stopping at the main viewpoints. If you want to do the Otira Valley Track (1–2 hours return), allow an extra 2–3 hours total. Most travellers combine it with a journey across Arthur's Pass, so half a day is ample to appreciate the gorge and its surroundings.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hokitika Gorge: Famous for its turquoise water and swingbridge, around 1.5 hours southwest – a classic West Coast detour.
