Okarito Lagoon, a vast tidal estuary on the wild West Coast of the South Island, is a sanctuary for birdlife and a serene escape from the crowds. The lagoon is the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand, offering kayaking, birdwatching, and a chance to spot the rare kotuku (white heron) in its natural habitat. The tiny settlement of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, provides a peaceful base for exploring this untamed corner of the country.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least half a day to Okarito Lagoon — a morning kayak followed by the Trig walk is ideal. If you're keen on the White Heron Sanctuary tour, allow a full day, as the boat trip takes about three hours. Overnighting in Okarito (there are a few lodges and a DOC campground) lets you experience the lagoon at dawn and dusk, when bird activity peaks and the light is magical.
