Okarito Lagoon, a vast tidal estuary on the wild West Coast of the South Island, is a sanctuary for birdlife and a serene escape from the crowds. The lagoon is the largest unmodified wetland in New Zealand, offering kayaking, birdwatching, and a chance to spot the rare kotuku (white heron) in its natural habitat. The tiny settlement of Okarito, with its historic gold-mining past, provides a peaceful base for exploring this untamed corner of the country.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking the Lagoon: Glide through mirror-like waters surrounded by rainforest and snow-capped peaks; guided tours offer the best chance to see white herons, royal spoonbills, and other waterfowl.
- Okarito Trig Walk: A short but steep hike rewards with panoramic views over the lagoon, the Tasman Sea, and the Southern Alps — especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
- White Heron Sanctuary Tour: From September to March, boat tours take you up the Waitangiroto River to view the only mainland breeding colony of the kotuku, a sacred Māori taonga.
- Okarito Beach: A wild, windswept stretch of black sand where you can walk for miles, feeling the raw power of the West Coast.
- Historic Okarito: Wander the old gold miners' cemetery and the former wharf area, imagining life during the 1860s gold rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to Okarito Lagoon — a morning kayak followed by the Trig walk is ideal. If you're keen on the White Heron Sanctuary tour, allow a full day, as the boat trip takes about three hours. Overnighting in Okarito (there are a few lodges and a DOC campground) lets you experience the lagoon at dawn and dusk, when bird activity peaks and the light is magical.
