Kaikoura is a dramatic coastal town on New Zealand's South Island, where the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range plunges straight into the Pacific Ocean. Famous for its incredible marine life, this is one of the best places on Earth to see sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and fur seals year-round. The town's name means 'meal of crayfish' in Māori, and you'll find plenty of that on local menus. With its unique geology, rich Māori heritage, and world-class wildlife encounters, Kaikoura is an unforgettable stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one to two nights in Kaikoura. With a full day, you can do a whale-watching tour in the morning, walk the peninsula in the afternoon, and enjoy a seafood dinner. If you have two days, add a dolphin swim or seal snorkel, and consider a scenic flight over the mountains. Kaikoura is also a great overnight stop when driving between Christchurch and the Marlborough wine region.
