Hokitika, a ruggedly charming town on the wild West Coast, is a gateway to glacier country and a treasure trove of pounamu (greenstone). Once a bustling gold-rush port, it now feels like a laid-back frontier outpost, where driftwood sculptures line the beach and the Tasman Sea crashes against the shore. The air smells of sea salt and fresh-cut timber, and the locals are as genuine as the landscape is dramatic.
Highlights & What to See
- Hokitika Gorge Walk – An easy 20-minute walk leads to a swingbridge over impossibly turquoise water, set against a backdrop of lush native bush. The colour is surreal, especially on a sunny day.
- Glow Worm Dell – A short, magical detour just south of town. After dark, the bush comes alive with thousands of tiny blue-green lights. Bring a torch but keep it off once you're in the dell.
- National Kiwi Centre – See live kiwi in a nocturnal house, plus tuatara and eels. It's a low-key, educational stop that's perfect for families.
- Hokitika Beach & Driftwood Art – The beach is famous for its ever-changing driftwood sculptures, created by locals and visitors. Time your visit for sunset when the sky turns fiery.
- Pounamu (Greenstone) Workshops – Hokitika is the heart of New Zealand's jade carving. Watch artisans at work in studios like Bonz 'n' Stonz or Mountain Jade, and take home a piece of authentic Māori craftsmanship.
- Wildfoods Festival (March) – If you're here in early autumn, don't miss this quirky celebration of West Coast cuisine, featuring delicacies like huhu grubs, whitebait fritters, and possum pâté.
Suggested Time to Spend
One full day is enough to see the main sights: spend the morning walking the Hokitika Gorge and visiting the kiwi centre, then wander the town's galleries and workshops in the afternoon. If you're a keen photographer or hiker, add a second day to explore nearby Lake Kaniere or the Hokitika River valley. Most travellers pass through on their way between Franz Josef and Greymouth, but Hokitika deserves an overnight stop to soak up its easygoing vibe.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – A 1.5-hour drive south, this iconic glacier offers heli-hikes and valley walks. Pair it with Hokitika for a classic West Coast glacier-and-coast itinerary.
- Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks) – Head north 45 minutes to see the layered limestone formations and blowholes at high tide. A must-stop on the road to Greymouth.
- Lake Kaniere – A pristine lake just 20 minutes inland, perfect for kayaking, swimming, or a quiet picnic. The Lake Kaniere Walkway is a gentle 2-hour loop through podocarp forest.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – About 2 hours east via the stunning Otira Gorge, this alpine park offers world-class tramping and the chance to see kea. Combine it with Hokitika for a coast-to-alps road trip.
