Hokitika Gorge

Hokitika Gorge is one of New Zealand's most photogenic natural wonders, where the turquoise-blue waters of the Hokitika River carve through a narrow canyon of ancient granite. The surreal colour comes from glacial flour suspended in the water, creating a vivid milky-teal hue that almost looks artificial. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a swing bridge suspended over the gorge, offering heart-stopping views down into the churning water below. This is a must-stop on any West Coast road trip, just a 30-minute drive from Hokitika town.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Budget about 1–1.5 hours for the gorge itself, including the walk and plenty of time for photos. It's easy to combine with a half-day exploration of Hokitika town and the surrounding coast. If you're driving from Arthur's Pass, allow 2 hours each way, making this a perfect morning or afternoon detour.
