Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest near the Tasman Sea. The tiny, adventure-minded town of Franz Josef serves as your base, offering a raw, wild atmosphere that sets the stage for unforgettable ice encounters.
Highlights & What to See
- Heli-Hike: The quintessential experience – a scenic helicopter flight lands you on the glacier, where you strap on crampons and explore blue ice caves, crevasses, and seracs with a guide.
- Terminal Face Walk: A short, easy walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform facing the glacier's terminal face. The scale is awe-inspiring, and you can watch ice calve into the river below.
- Lake Mapourika: A stunning, mirror-like lake just north of town – perfect for kayaking or a peaceful walk. Its dark, tannin-stained waters create incredible reflections of the surrounding peaks.
- Okarito Lagoon: A 30-minute drive south, this is New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland. Join a kayak tour to spot white herons (kotuku) and other birdlife, or hike the trig track for panoramic views.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: See rare kiwi and tuatara in a conservation setting. It's a great rainy-day option and offers insight into the region's unique fauna.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Franz Josef for two nights. This allows a full day for a heli-hike or a guided ice walk (allow 4-5 hours including helicopter time), plus another day to explore the walks, lakes, and nearby Okarito. If you're short on time, a single night can suffice for a morning heli-hike and an afternoon walk to the terminal face, but two nights lets you truly soak in the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Just 23 km south, this is Franz Josef's quieter sibling. The glacier itself is less steep, but the walks and heli-hikes are equally spectacular. Combine both glaciers for a comprehensive west coast ice experience.
- Lake Matheson: Famous for its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. It's a short, easy loop walk near Fox Glacier, best done at dawn or dusk.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach 20 km from Fox Glacier. It's a great spot for seal watching, and the short walk to the old gold-mining settlement adds historical interest.
- Whataroa: A small town north of Franz Josef, home to the White Heron Sanctuary Tours. From September to March, you can visit the only mainland breeding colony of the elegant kotuku.
