Whataroa

Whataroa is a tiny, tranquil settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, cradled by dense rainforest and the Southern Alps. This is a place where time slows down, where the roar of the Whataroa River competes with birdsong, and where the main draw is the chance to get up close to one of the country’s rarest birds – the rowi kiwi. For travellers on a self-drive journey along State Highway 6, Whataroa offers a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience, with a strong conservation focus and a palpable sense of remoteness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors pass through Whataroa in a day, but to truly appreciate its wild beauty and the kiwi experience, plan for one night. Arrive in the afternoon, explore the river and nearby Okarito, then join the evening kiwi tour. The next morning, you can continue south to Franz Josef or north to Hokitika. If you’re short on time, a two-hour stop for a river walk and a coffee at the local café is still rewarding.
