Fox Glacier

Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, cascading down from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. Unlike its busier cousin Franz Josef, Fox retains a quieter, more intimate feel. The terminal face is just a short walk from the valley floor, and the surrounding landscape—carved by ice over millennia—offers a raw, ever-changing beauty that draws hikers, photographers, and adventurers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full day to experience Fox Glacier properly. A morning glacier walk (2–3 hours) and an afternoon at Lake Matheson (2 hours) is a perfect self-drive day. If you book a heli-hike, plan for 4–5 hours including transport and safety briefing. Many visitors stay one night to catch sunrise at the lake, then drive on to Franz Josef or Wanaka.
