Fox Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, cascading down from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. Unlike its busier cousin Franz Josef, Fox retains a quieter, more intimate feel. The terminal face is just a short walk from the valley floor, and the surrounding landscape—carved by ice over millennia—offers a raw, ever-changing beauty that draws hikers, photographers, and adventurers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Valley Walk: A well-maintained 1.5-hour return track leads to the terminal face viewpoint, passing through lush rainforest and across rocky moraine. The ice cliffs, crevasses, and meltwater pools are mesmerizing up close.
- Heli-Hike Tours: For an unforgettable experience, take a helicopter flight onto the upper glacier. You’ll land on the nevé and spend two hours exploring ice caves, deep crevasses, and seracs with a guide—no technical skills required.
- Lake Matheson: A 15-minute drive away, this serene lake offers mirror-perfect reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman at dawn or dusk. The easy 1.5-hour loop track winds through silver beech forest.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes from the village, with seal colonies and the remains of a gold-mining settlement. The coastal walkway is a great spot for sunset.
- Fox Glacier Village: A compact settlement with a handful of cafes, a general store, and accommodation. The Glacier Viewing Gallery provides a good introduction to glacial history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to experience Fox Glacier properly. A morning glacier walk (2–3 hours) and an afternoon at Lake Matheson (2 hours) is a perfect self-drive day. If you book a heli-hike, plan for 4–5 hours including transport and safety briefing. Many visitors stay one night to catch sunrise at the lake, then drive on to Franz Josef or Wanaka.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier: A 25-minute drive north, with more tour options including ice climbing and kayaking on the terminal lake.
- Okarito Lagoon: A pristine coastal wetland 40 minutes north, famous for its kayaking trails and the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.
- Haast Pass & Wanaka: The scenic drive south over Haast Pass (2.5 hours) takes you through beech forest, waterfalls, and the Blue Pools. Wanaka is a great base for further adventures.
- Ship Creek: A short stop 30 minutes south of Fox, with a kahikatea swamp forest boardwalk and a wild beach—ideal for a leg stretch.
