Twin Cones

Rising above the southern shores of Lake Wānaka, the Twin Cones track offers a rewarding half-day hike with panoramic views that rival the more famous Roys Peak — but with far fewer crowds. This lesser-known trail winds through golden tussock and rocky terrain, culminating in two distinct summit knobs that overlook the lake, the town, and the Southern Alps. It’s a favourite among locals for its quieter trails and the sense of wilderness that feels just a step away from town.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 3–4 hours return for the Twin Cones track, which climbs steadily for about 5 km to the first cone and a bit further to the second. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday sun and catch the best light for photos. The track is well-formed but steep in sections, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential. If you’re short on time, you can reach the first cone in about 1.5 hours and enjoy the view before heading back.
