Isthmus Peak

Isthmus Peak is one of Wanaka's most rewarding day hikes, offering jaw-dropping views of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hāwea from a single summit. The trail climbs steadily through beech forest and tussock-covered slopes before revealing a 360-degree panorama that captures the Southern Alps, the braided rivers of the Makarora Valley, and the twin lakes shimmering in the distance. It's a quieter alternative to nearby Roy's Peak, with fewer crowds but equally spectacular scenery — a must for hikers seeking a sense of wilderness close to Wanaka.

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day for the Isthmus Peak hike. The return tramp covers 16 km with 1,200 m of elevation gain, taking most people 5–7 hours round trip. Start early to avoid afternoon winds and to catch the best light for photography. It's a strenuous day walk, not suitable for beginners, but very rewarding for fit hikers.
