Rising above the southern shores of Lake Wānaka, the Twin Cones track offers a rewarding half-day hike with panoramic views that rival the more famous Roys Peak — but with far fewer crowds. This lesser-known trail winds through golden tussock and rocky terrain, culminating in two distinct summit knobs that overlook the lake, the town, and the Southern Alps. It’s a favourite among locals for its quieter trails and the sense of wilderness that feels just a step away from town.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: From the top, soak in the full expanse of Lake Wānaka, the distant peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park, and the checkerboard of farmland below.
- Alpine Flora: In spring and summer, the hillsides are dotted with mountain daisies, speargrass, and the delicate flowers of the native Spaniard plant.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for New Zealand falcons (kārearea) soaring above and the occasional skink sunning on a rock.
- That Wānaka Tree: After your hike, drive a few minutes to the lake’s edge to see the famous solitary willow, a beloved photo subject.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3–4 hours return for the Twin Cones track, which climbs steadily for about 5 km to the first cone and a bit further to the second. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday sun and catch the best light for photos. The track is well-formed but steep in sections, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential. If you’re short on time, you can reach the first cone in about 1.5 hours and enjoy the view before heading back.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Roys Peak: For a longer, more challenging day hike with iconic Instagram views, tackle Roys Peak — just a 10-minute drive from the Twin Cones trailhead.
- That Wānaka Tree: A must-see landmark a few minutes’ drive away, best visited at sunrise or sunset for calm waters and golden light.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: A short drive brings you to trailheads for the Rob Roy Glacier walk or the more demanding Isthmus Peak track.
- Wānaka Town: Refuel at one of the lakeside cafés or browse the boutique shops after your hike.
