Carved by ancient glaciers and the braided Waitaki River, the Waitaki Valley is a land of dramatic contrasts—tawny tussock hills, turquoise hydro lakes, and limestone outcrops that glow gold at sunset. This is a region where Māori rock art, Victorian gold-rush history, and world-class wineries sit side by side, offering a deeply authentic slice of New Zealand’s South Island. The valley’s quiet roads and small settlements feel a world away from tourist crowds, making it a perfect detour on the drive between Christchurch and Queenstown.
Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up the valley’s highlights. Base yourself in Ōamaru for one night to explore the Victorian precinct, penguin colony, and nearby limestone formations. On day two, drive inland through Duntroon and Kurow, stopping at wineries and the Vanished World Centre. A third day allows for a hike or kayak on Lake Benmore and a visit to the geopark. If you’re driving the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, budget extra time for detours.
