Tekapo is a stunning alpine village on the shores of Lake Tekapo, famous for its turquoise waters, the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, and some of the darkest skies in the world. This is a place where you can soak in hot pools under the stars, hike through golden tussock hills, and experience the raw beauty of the Mackenzie Basin.
Highlights & What to See
- Church of the Good Shepherd – The tiny stone church on the lakeshore is one of New Zealand's most photographed landmarks, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Lake Tekapo – The brilliant milky-turquoise colour comes from glacial flour; walk the lakeside track or simply sit and take in the view.
- Mount John Observatory – Drive or hike up for panoramic views of the lake and the Southern Alps; join a night tour for world-class stargazing (the area is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve).
- Tekapo Springs – Three outdoor hot pools with lake and mountain views, plus a sauna and ice skating in winter.
- Takapō / Tekapo Regional Park – A network of walking and biking trails along the lake and up the hills, with wild lupins blooming in summer.
- Sheepdog Memorial – A small statue near the church honouring the working dogs of the high-country stations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal: one day to explore the lake, church, and short walks, and a second day for a Mount John hike or stargazing tour. If you're just passing through, even a couple of hours are worth it for a lakeside stroll and a photo at the church. The town is compact, so everything is within walking distance.
