Twizel is a small, purpose-built town in the Mackenzie Basin, serving as the perfect base for exploring the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve and the southern end of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. With its wide, open streets and stunning mountain backdrop, Twizel offers a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe and some of the best stargazing in the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park – Just a 45-minute drive away, this is the heart of New Zealand's highest peaks and the iconic Hooker Valley Track.
- Lake Pukaki – The milky turquoise lake, fed by glacial flour, offers jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook. Stop at the viewpoint on State Highway 8.
- Ohau Snow Fields – A fantastic, less-crowded ski area in winter, with a clubby atmosphere and great terrain for intermediates.
- Twizel River Trails – A network of walking and cycling paths along the braided Twizel River, perfect for a gentle afternoon ride.
- Stargazing in the Dark Sky Reserve – Twizel is one of the best places on Earth to see the Milky Way. Join a guided tour or simply look up on a clear night.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Twizel, using it as a base for Aoraki/Mount Cook and the lakes. If you're keen on hiking, allow a full day for the Hooker Valley Track and another for exploring Lake Pukaki and the Ohau region. Skiers might stay longer in winter.
