Tekapo is a stunning alpine village on the shores of Lake Tekapo, famous for its turquoise waters, the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd, and some of the darkest skies in the world. This is a place where you can soak in hot pools under the stars, hike through golden tussock hills, and experience the raw beauty of the Mackenzie Basin.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two days is ideal: one day to explore the lake, church, and short walks, and a second day for a Mount John hike or stargazing tour. If you're just passing through, even a couple of hours are worth it for a lakeside stroll and a photo at the church. The town is compact, so everything is within walking distance.
