Milford Sound, carved by glaciers and often draped in mist, is Fiordland National Park's most iconic fiord. Rainforest-clad cliffs rise dramatically from dark waters, and waterfalls cascade down sheer rock faces after rainfall. A cruise or kayak trip here reveals seals basking on rocks, dolphins playing in the wake, and the thunderous Stirling and Bowen Falls. The journey itself—through the Homer Tunnel and along the Milford Road—is an epic alpine drive.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate a full day: a 2–3 hour cruise plus driving time from Te Anau (2 hours each way) or Queenstown (4 hours each way). If you can, stay overnight in Milford Sound Lodge to experience the fiord in the quiet evening and early morning light, when the crowds are thin and the wildlife is most active.
