Glenorchy

Glenorchy is a tiny lakeside settlement at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, framed by the jagged peaks of the Earnslaw and Humboldt ranges. It’s the gateway to the Routeburn Track and a hub for adrenaline-fuelled adventures like jet-boating and horseback riding through the landscapes that starred in Lord of the Rings. The drive from Queenstown along the lake’s edge is one of New Zealand’s most scenic, making Glenorchy an essential stop for anyone exploring the Wakatipu basin.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day here, combining a morning jet-boat trip or walk with a relaxed lunch at the Glenorchy Café. If you’re hiking the Routeburn Track, allow 3 days. For a quick stop, 2–3 hours is enough to walk the lagoon loop, snap photos at the wharf, and drive to Paradise and back.
