Dart River

The Dart River surges through a wild, glacier-carved valley in Mount Aspiring National Park, its milky-blue waters fed by the snows of the Southern Alps. This is New Zealand at its most dramatic – a landscape of towering peaks, ancient beech forests, and braided river flats that feels untouched by time. Jet-boat rides and wilderness jet safaris are the classic way to experience the river's raw power, but kayaking, hiking, and even film-location tours (the river starred in The Lord of the Rings) offer quieter perspectives. The drive in from Glenorchy along the Rees Valley is an adventure in itself, with ever-changing views that make you want to stop every five minutes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors experience the Dart River as a half-day trip from Glenorchy or Queenstown. A jet-boat ride and short walk can be done in 3–4 hours, including travel time from Glenorchy. If you want to kayak or hike a section of the Rees-Dart Track, plan a full day. For a deeper immersion, consider an overnight tramp on the Rees-Dart Circuit (3–4 days), but this requires solid backcountry experience and advance planning.
