Perched dramatically over the churning turquoise waters of the Kawarau River, the Kawarau Gorge Bungy Centre is the spiritual home of bungy jumping. This is where AJ Hackett launched the world's first commercial bungy jump in 1988, turning a madcap Kiwi idea into a global adventure phenomenon. The historic site still buzzes with nervous energy and adrenaline, offering the original 43-metre leap from the historic Kawarau Bridge – a bucket-list experience that’s as much about the stunning schist gorge setting as the jump itself. Even if you’re not leaping, the riverside platform is a thrilling spectator spot, and the on-site café serves excellent coffee to steady your nerves.
Highlights & What to See
- The Original Bungy Jump: Take the plunge from the historic Kawarau Bridge – you can touch the river or go completely solo. Book ahead to secure your spot.
- Spectator Platform: Stand inches from the launch pad and watch jumpers scream, smile and dangle above the river. It’s free and surprisingly addictive.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Museum: A small but fascinating display of early bungy prototypes, photos and the story of how it all began.
- Kawarau Gorge Views: The surrounding schist cliffs, native bush and the river’s milky-blue colour make this a photogenic spot even without the jump.
- On-site Café & Gear Shop: Grab a flat white and a bite while watching the action, or pick up a souvenir T-shirt to prove you were here.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours if you’re jumping (including check-in, safety briefing and the jump itself). If you’re just spectating and soaking up the atmosphere, 30–45 minutes is plenty. The site is a perfect quick stop on the way between Queenstown and Cromwell – combine it with a winery visit or a stroll through historic Arrowtown for a full day out.
